Private water well screenings and education program set for Nolanville, Texas May 12-13th
The Texas Well Owner Network, TWON, and Lone Star Healthy Streams, LSHS, will host water screening and education events in Nolanville on May 12-13. Residents and well owners can have their well water screened and receive training in groundwater and surface water protection.
Joel Pigg, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist, said the Texas Well Owner Network program is for Texas residents who depend on household wells for their water needs while the Lone Star Healthy Streams education component aims to increase awareness of surface water pollution origination from livestock, wildlife, and feral hogs.
Water samples will be screened for contaminants, including total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen, arsenic, and salinity.
Residents who want to have their well water tested should pick up a sample bag, bottles, and instructions from the Nolanville City Hall before the event. Each sample costs $15, but Clearwater UWCD will cover this fee for all Bell County residents.
Area residents can drop off water samples 8:30-10:30 a.m. May 12 at the Nolanville City Hall, 101 N. 5th St.
The results meeting will be held 9-11:30 a.m. May 13 at the Smart Museum in Nolanville, 408 N. 10th St.
“It is essential to use official sample bags and bottles and follow all instructions to ensure accurate results,” Pigg said.
Private water wells should be tested annually, he said. The samples will be screened for contaminants, including total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate-nitrogen, arsenic and salinity.
Pigg said it is essential for those submitting samples to be at the appropriate follow-up meeting to receive results, learn corrective measures for identified problems and improve their understanding of private well management.
Funding for TWON and LSHS is through a Clean Water Act Section 319(h) nonpoint source grant provided by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
